TYLER, TX—As bad COVID-19 news hits Texas leadership in recent weeks, some are shifting focus onto the looming governor’s campaign in the Lone Star state next year.
New polls that came out this week show potential match-ups between a Governor Abbott campaign against a potential bid from actor, philanthropist, and notable Lone Star son Matthew McConaughey.
In the Dallas Morning News & UT Tyler poll out this week, Governor Abbott only held onto a one-point advantage over McConaughey. That is a far-cry from Abbott’s 2014 race for Governor, when he won almost 60% of the state.
In recent months, McConaughey has teased a potential bid, which would be on a centrist platform. McConaughey’s star power has the Governor’s campaign staff stressing more every day over a campaign that should have been a formality for the conservative steward.
